Behind the Scenes: Developing an AI Commercial for the Flux Campus Scholarship
This documentary is an honest behind-the-scenes look at the creative process behind developing an AI commercial for the Flux Campus scholarship. Rather than simply showcasing a finished product, it documents the exploration, problem-solving and iteration that goes into turning an educational brief into a cinematic visual story. It is important to note that this documentary captures the process of building an iterative version of the scholarship commercial, illuminating the practical realities of working with AI video workflows.
The project began with a thorough review of the original Flux Campus scholarship brief. The objective was clear: encourage qualified, ambitious learners to apply for an opportunity that could transform their tech careers. However, traditional education commercials often default to a dry, transactional formula—listing criteria, dates, and commands to apply now. The strategic realization was that urgency without aspiration rarely motivates high-caliber applicants. The commercial needed to shift from telling people what to do to helping them feel what was possible.
To move away from a conventional promotional pitch, the core concept was built around the idea of 'imagining your future.' The narrative followed distinct characters representing viable career paths in modern technology. By seeing someone like themselves thriving in a future role, the viewer isn't confronted with an ad; they are invited into a plausible future that starts with taking a single step through the scholarship.
Once the concept was established, it was translated into an audio-visual (AV) script. An AV script forces discipline because every spoken voiceover sentence must have a corresponding visual beat that advances the story. In AI video production, writing the script beforehand prevents the trap of generating random cool images and then trying to string them together into an incoherent story.
One of the most critical and challenging phases of the project was character consistency. Generative AI tools naturally want to create different faces, lighting, and clothing in every single generation. To combat this, I developed detailed character sheets and reference prompts to anchor facial features, skin tone, hair, and wardrobe across multiple scenes. Maintaining character identity across different environments is what elevates an AI project from a novelty demo into a believable commercial narrative.
The visual production phase involved extensive generation and rigorous iteration. Many initial image and video generations had to be discarded due to unnatural motion, distorted anatomy, or mismatched lighting. Working through aspect-ratio limitations also required careful composition planning so subjects wouldn't get cropped awkwardly during framing adjustments. Testing different AI models allowed me to discover which engines handled subtle human expressions best versus dynamic environmental movement.
Parallel to visual creation, voiceover generation was calibrated to establish the right emotional resonance. The delivery needed to feel grounded, warm, and inspiring without sliding into corporate melodrama. Pacing was everything: words needed room to breathe so the viewer had time to absorb the visual world on screen.
Once the usable generations and audio files were selected, everything was brought into CapCut for editorial assembly. In the edit, the true rhythm of the piece was sculpted. Visual transitions were matched to acoustic cues, and sound design—ambient room tones, subtle risers, and atmospheric textures—was layered beneath the music to ground the AI imagery in realistic weight.
The primary lesson from this documentary is that AI tools do not replace creative direction; they demand more of it. Without clear strategic thinking, rigorous visual standards, and patient editorial judgment, AI generation is just noise. When guided by a clear human premise, it becomes a powerful vehicle for storytelling.
